1 | Riddell – History & Innovation
Riddell has shaped the evolution of football safety since 1929, when founder John T. Riddell introduced the first football cleat with removable studs. In the 1940s, the company supplied the National Football League (NFL) with leather helmets – and in 1954, it launched the first plastic helmet shell. In the late 1990s, Riddell introduced the “Revolution” platform, with a helmet design specifically aimed at reducing concussions. Within three seasons, over 80% of NFL starters wore a model from the Revo series.
Today, Riddell operates its own helmet plant in Elyria, Ohio, employing over 220 people. An in-house biomechanics team works alongside the NFL’s “Next Gen Stats” program to continuously improve impact analysis. Every varsity helmet from Riddell currently holds a 5-star rating from the independent Virginia Tech STAR lab.
Technical innovations are introduced almost annually: In 2014, the SpeedFlex helmet featured a flexible crown panel that reduced linear impact forces by up to 26%. In 2019, the “Precision-Fit” system entered the market, replacing traditional air liners with a full-head laser-scan fitting. In 2022, Riddell introduced the Axiom helmet, featuring a one-piece carbon-mix shell, integrated Tru-View visor, and the InSite v3 sensor system, which delivers real-time impact data.
Off the field, Riddell invests in youth safety programs and operates its own reconditioning division, which has saved over 1.8 million helmets from being discarded since 2010. Few brands combine athletic excellence, scientifically validated safety, and sustainable circular economy practices as comprehensively as Riddell – a key reason why GFL and ELF teams rank this Illinois-based company at the top of their gear lists.
