Football Helmet FAQ

Got questions about American football helmets?
Here you'll find compact answers – from finding the right size to taking care of your Riddell, Schutt, or Xenith helmet.

How do I measure my helmet size?
Take a flexible tape measure and measure the circumference of your head about 1 inch (2.5 cm) above your eyebrows – wrap it horizontally around the widest part of your head. Compare the result with the manufacturer’s size chart. → Detailed instructions

How do I know if the helmet fits correctly?
It shouldn’t wobble or squeeze. Turn your head, bend it forward and back – the helmet should stay in place. With the chinstrap fastened, you should still be able to chew and speak comfortably.

When should I replace my helmet?
After five seasons at the latest – or immediately after a major impact that causes visible damage. Regularly check the shell, padding, and screws. → More on helmet lifespan

How do I clean and maintain my football helmet?
Wipe the shell with mild soapy water, let the padding air dry, and tighten all screws. Store the helmet in a cool, shaded place. → Detailed care tips

Can I use a tinted visor?
Only if your league allows it – many associations permit tinted or mirrored visors only with a doctor’s note. Clear visors are usually allowed.

Riddell vs. Schutt vs. Xenith – what’s the difference?
Riddell stands out with the flexible SpeedFlex panel and high-tech Axiom. Schutt uses TPU cushioning and RFLX pods (F7 series). Xenith relies on adaptive Fit Capsules. → See the brand pages: Riddell, Schutt

Can I repair my helmet?
Minor issues (padding, chinstraps, screws) can be fixed yourself. For cracks in the shell or damaged attachments, contact a certified reconditioning service. → Step-by-step guide: Helmet repair

What safety standards apply?
NOCSAE in the US, CE in Europe. Many helmets also carry a 5-star rating from the Virginia Tech lab. Always check for up-to-date certifications.

How heavy should a football helmet be?
Varsity helmets usually weigh between 1.3 – 1.7 kg. Lighter models suit speed positions, while heavier ones often offer more padding.

What’s the difference between youth and adult helmets?
Youth helmets use softer ABS shells and different cushioning to reduce weight. Adult helmets are made from stronger polycarbonate and meet higher impact standards.

Do I need a different helmet for flag football or 7-on-7?
Many leagues require soft-shell helmets or specific 7-on-7 caps. For low-contact training, a lighter helmet may be a smart choice. → Info in our Flag Helmet Blog

Facemask, chinstrap & other accessories – what fits?
Facemasks are brand- and model-specific. The same goes for quick-release clips. → See our helmet accessories guide for compatibility and install tips
